1. Where is this event being held again?
Answer: Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House, 800 E Broadway, Vancouver, BC, V5T 1Y1
2. When is this event?
A. June 7, 2017, and June 21, 2017, 7pm to 9pm
3. How much does this event cost?
A. This event is free, courtesy of Vancouver's Neighbourhood Small Grant program. Just bring yourself and your instrument.
4. What instruments are welcome?
A. Fiddle, Tune Whistle, Bouzouki, Guitar, Drum, Hurdy Gurdy, off the top of my head. Really, any instrument that you can play acoustically and you think you can play the tunes on, give it a shot.
5. What age people are welcome?
A. This is a public event geared towards adult learners and musicians, but if you think your older child would enjoy coming out and playing with a group by ear, feel free to accompany them to the session. Children are welcome, but should be either playing along or stationary while accompanied by their caregiver. We want to avoid any slips or falls with moving instruments in the room. If you are a Mount Pleasant Resident who wants to come out and play music with us, you are welcome.
6. What languages will be spoken?
A. This session will be led in English; (insert about Vie Greek/French???) If English is not yet comfortable for you but you want to play music with us, please attend, you are welcome. Music is it's own language, even if we cannot communicate well outside of it yet.
7. Will there be sheet music available on site?
A. Yes, there will be select sheet music song books available on site for those who need it, of folk songs that are no longer covered by copyright.
8. What if I don't think I'm very good on my instrument?
A. Come anyways. Play along on the tunes you feel comfortable with, or just listen and enjoy the music. They will mostly be simple ABAC tunes that will be played multiple rounds through to facilitate quick ear learning. Other attendees will range experience levels of playing their instruments for a few months up to decades. People just play what they know, and learn by ear when they hear something they don't.
9. What kind of tunes will you play?
A. We are going to be playing a mix of Celtic tunes and Greek folk music. Your hosts have an interest and background in such, and are sharing our motivation to learn more songs and connect with others while doing so. Not everyone will know every tune suggested, and that's OK.
10. No, really, that doesn't help. I'm anxious and I want to know more. Tell me some of the songs you will be playing so I can learn them first.
A. Right! That's a good thing to know. Over the next week, I'll be posting both sheet music and youtube videos of various songs that we will be playing at the sessions. Take your time over the next month to see what you can learn. Some quick examples of Celtic tunes will be Paddy McFaddens, Road to Listenverna, Sunny's Mazurka, The South Wind, Mary's Wedding, and The Butterfly.
11. What will the format be?
A. We will do introductions at ten after, tune our instruments, and play for half an hour. There will be a short snack and social break, followed by another half hour of playing. We need to have cleaned up and be out of the room by nine.
12. How do I let you know that I'm coming out?
A. Please sign up by either emailing <s>, commenting on the main event page, or just dropping by.
13. What is the accessibility like at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood house?
A. Insert accessibility info re: stairs, elevators, room size, refuge spaces, bathroom setup
14.
15. I have another question; how do I contact you?
A. Please send any questions you have via the Contact The Author page.
